Come Holy Spirit – Draw Me Deeper

Spread the love

Deepening your relationship with God is a beautiful and lifelong journey that the Catholic Church offers many paths to explore. At its heart, it’s about growing in love and communion with the One who created you and desires to be intimately known by you.

Here are some key ways to foster a deeper relationship with God:

Consistent Prayer: Prayer is essentially conversation with God. Just like any relationship, it thrives on communication. Prayer isn’t one-size fits all nor is it the same every time you pray. Different situations or life challenges can require prayer to change.

  • Vocal Prayer: Traditional prayers like the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be are powerful ways to express devotion and unite with the Church’s prayer. The Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy are profound prayers that meditate on God’s Mercy and upon the life of Christ through Mary’s eyes.
  • Meditation: This involves reflecting on Scripture, a spiritual text, or a mystery of the faith, allowing God’s Word to speak to your heart.
  • Contemplation: Moving beyond words and thoughts, contemplation is a silent, loving gaze upon God, simply resting in His presence.
  • Daily Habit: Even short, consistent periods of prayer can transform your relationship.

Frequent Reception of the Sacraments: The Sacraments are outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace.

  • Eucharist: Receiving Holy Communion is the most intimate encounter with Christ on earth. Regular Mass attendance and reception of the Eucharist nourish your soul and unite you with the Body of Christ.
  • Reconciliation (Confession): This sacrament restores and strengthens your relationship with God when it has been wounded by sin. It’s a profound experience of God’s mercy and forgiveness, allowing you to begin anew. Sin hurts us, and reconciliation heals those wounds.

Study of Scripture and Catholic Teaching: God reveals Himself through His Word and the teachings of the Church.

  • Reading the Bible: Spend time with the Gospels, Psalms, and other books of the Bible. Allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate the text for you. Set aside time daily to read something from Scripture. Maybe a Psalm a day or reflect over and over on the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12) or the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:7-15) or some other favorite story. The key is habit – just do it.
  • Catechism of the Catholic Church: Explore the rich teachings of the Church to understand the faith more deeply.

Living a Life of Charity and Service: Jesus teaches us to find Him in our neighbor, especially those in need (Matthew 25:40).

  • Love of Neighbor: Pope Francis emphasizes that true healing and a deep relationship with God are found not in fleeing community, but in encountering others with the right attitude, seeing the sacred grandeur in each person, and finding God in their faces and pleas. (Evangelii Gaudium, 91-92).
  • Acts of Mercy: As St. Teresa of Calcutta reminds us, small things done with great love can make a big difference in someone’s life and help us encounter Christ.

Spiritual Friendship and Community: We are not meant to walk the spiritual journey alone.

  • Fellowship: Sharing your faith, joys, and struggles with other believers can be a powerful support. As Fr. Thomas Dubay highlights, spiritual friendship is “extremely important for souls not yet fortified in virtue,” helping us advance and grow in charity.
  • Parish Life: Active participation in your parish community strengthens your connection to the larger Body of Christ.

Ultimately, deepening your relationship with God is about responding to His constant invitation to love. It’s born from the encounter, from feeling accepted, understood, and loved by Him, and from accepting, understanding, and loving in return (Pope Francis). Opening one’s heart to the Holy Spirit and letting Him enter – giving Him a place to take up residence.

Which of these paths resonates most with you, or is there a particular aspect you’d like to explore further?
