What is an indulgence?
“An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints” – Catechism of the Catholic Church # 1471
Did you know that praying the Holy Rosary grants you an indulgence? Or, praying for the intentions of the Holy Father with a simple Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary and Glory Be grants an indulgence?
This is such a simple way to ‘pay it forward’.
We’ve done this several times over the past five years but today in a different but similar mindset. We regularly pray for the emptying of Purgatory on The Road of Faith.
Today, by simply joining together in praying the Holy Rosary and for the intentions of Pope Leo XIV, we offer indulgences into Purgatory. This is a simple way to ‘make saints.’ You do know that any soul who enters into Heaven is a saint. This is the primary reason for Purgatory – that we may be sanctified fully in order to enter God’s Presence. No soul comes to the beatific vision with any stain of sin or attachment to anything other than God.
So, by offering our Rosary and prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father, we take a soul who is still “on the road” and may be giving a soul(s) an indulgenced pass to Heaven, opening their passage from Purgatory.
If all the followers do this today (and every day forward), we send two indulgences each into Purgatory – upwards of thousands each day.
Won’t it be awesome to meet those souls at Heaven’s gate someday?
