Praise Monday – Stabat Mater

Spread the love

Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of Our Lord’s mother, Mary (Luke 2:35).

Sung through the prayer of the Stations of the Cross, the Stabat Mater (At the Cross Her Station Keeping) takes us along the Via Delorosa – the walk with Jesus through His Passion to Calvary.

Singing with Mary’s journey through the crucifixion of our Lord, her beloved son, is heartbreaking and very spiritual. I highly recommend you make this journey at least once in the next days as we watch Jesus journey to the tomb.

Prayer:

At the cross her station keeping,
Stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last.

Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Now at length the sword had passed.
