Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant, carrying the new Noah and those He is destined to save through the coming storms.
God told Noah to build and ark, providing him with all the specifications. He then told him to get in the ark with his family and wait out the flood. Only those in the ark would survive the deluge – see Genesis 7:23.
Jesus spoke of Noah and the ark in relation to His own saving mission. He said, “As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For those days before the flood they will be eating and drinking, marrying and giving into marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark and the did not know until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” Matthew 24:37-40. St. Augustine understood Jesus to be the new Noah who would save His people by constructing the new ark.
In the Book of Revelation, the dragon spews our a demonic flood “like a river” to destroy the woman and her child (Revelation 12:15). The Church is this ark. And, Mary is the ark that carried Jesus and then was given by Jesus from the cross to carry His people. Mary is our refuge in the storm. As she carried Jesus, she also carries us.
Blessed Pope Pius IX said in his declaration of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception that Mary, as the Immaculate Conception is like the saving ark.
“Blessed, indeed, are those. Christians who bind themselves faithfully and completely to her as a secure anchor! The violent storms of the world will not make them flounder or carry away their heavenly riches. Blessed are those who enter into her as another Noah’s ark”. St. Louis de Montfort
