Come Holy Spirit – See My Heart

Spread the love

Nothing we do or say is hidden from the eyes and ears of God. We can put on a mask to the world, letting those around us see what we want them to see. We often find ourselves putting in a show for those around us. We give out free ‘rose colored glasses’ to those who look at us.

“He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums.  A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny.  Then he called his disciples and said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.  For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.’” – Mark 12:41-44

Jesus noted the scribes’ desire to be seen – looking for salutations, front row seats of honor – with a light shining on them. They wear the best of clothing and say flowery words – especially when seen to be praying.

But, Jesus turns to see the widow woman, not what she gives. The two copper coins aren’t as important to Jesus as the heart giving from ‘her poverty’.

“But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” – Luke 18:13

He calls out not the prayer of the publican but his heart – to humble to be seen, even by God as he cries.

God does see. He looks through the gifts and actions to the heart. The Father sees the soul of the sinner coming before His Mercy Throne. He knows the heart of the man standing in line for the confessional – that he comes in humble shame. He sees his contrite heart.

It is ok to be seen and even to receive the praises of men. But, if that is our intent, pride and vainglory seed many weeds and can destroy the soul and even pure actions.

“Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord … you serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23, 24

Come Holy Spirit, see my heart and intentions. Give to me a heart that desires only Your spotlight and praises.

“Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father Who is in Heaven.” – Matthew 5:16
