“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.
Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts of the Apostle 2:2-4
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Matthew 3:1
Fire is a wonderful picture of the work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is like a fire in at least three ways: He brings God’s presence, God’s passion, and God’s purity. The Holy Spirit is the presence of God as He indwells the heart of the believer.
The Holy Spirit creates the passion of God in our hearts. After the two traveling disciples talk with the resurrected Jesus, they describe their hearts as “burning within us” (Luke 24:32). After the apostles receive the Spirit at Pentecost, they have a passion that lasts a lifetime and impels them to speak the word of God boldly.
The Holy Spirit produces the purity of God in our lives. God’s purpose is to purify us, and the Spirit is the agent of our sanctification. As the silversmith uses fire to purge the dross from the precious metal, so God uses the Spirit to remove our sin from us. His fire cleanses and refines.
“you have purified us as silver is refined” Psalms 66:10
“When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.” Psalms 104:30
The Holy Spirit settles upon those who open their hearts and invite Him in. Now is the time for a new Pentecost within your soul and mind. Now is the time for repentance, purification and the presence of God to come to your life. Let the Fire of God fall into your soul, set your heart on fire, burning within your chest. Let this burning fire of God catch to all those around you! It is time to set the world aflame. Will you be the kindling? Will you let the Father declare, “YOU’RE FIRED!!!!”
As I was meditating on the blessings of God, my heart was burning with a love so strong that it seemed my breast would burst. – Divine Mercy in My Soul # 1705
