“Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.” Luke 12:15
When is money or riches enough? No one has ever said they have too much money. The rich soul strives to fill their portfolio with more wealth. The middle class wants to get just a bit more money for a restful retirement. The poor man wants enough to have some left over at the end of the week. Each of these is constantly striving for more. The goal posts always moving. “When I have this amount, I’ll be satisfied.” When you reach that goal, you see how you can do a little more with just a little more.
““The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, ‘What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’” Luke 12:16-19
But, if you’re always resetting the goal and striving for just a bit more, when are you satisfied? When is it ever enough? And, what if you finally reach the goal only to find yourself in the place of the rich man in Jesus’s parable of Luke 12.
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’” Like 12:20
I’ve known many who pushed and strived, sacrificed their free time and family to reach that goal. Only to die when finally able to slow themselves to sit back and enjoy the fruits of their labor. One man in particular pushed himself for his family to have ‘enough’ in the bank to retire and enjoy his family. Just three days after retiring, he passed away, never to have the time he so intensely worked toward.
“So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God.”” Luke 12:21
Live for God and all the true riches and blessing He gives – NOW. That is the reason my wife and I chose the life we live now and not later. Don’t wait. There is no promise of tomorrow.
