What is a prophet?

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.” 1 Corinthians 12:7-10

A prophet is someone who is regarded as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God. Prophecy can come in many forms. I’ve seen prophets who could read the Will of God in another’s life and ‘see’ God’s plan in the future of the world. But that is not all prophecy is.

I’ve discovered my prophetic gifts in my journaling and through my posts and reflections on The Road of Faith (www.theroadoffaith.net to subscribe). For me, my gift of prophecy I’ve come to see an ability of taking God’s Word and putting it into other forms that touches people in their moment or helps them see something more clearly. I’ve ‘seen’ scripture verses that apply to someone’s situation or worries.

A prophet, though, is not always someone who can see God’s Will and interpret it as a vision. Most prophets are simply what the dictionary definition says, “a teacher or proclaimer” of God’s message.

God will make a prophet of everyone who is walking the Road of Faith. You can participate in God’s Will nurturing this gift of the Holy Spirit by simply reading the inspired word of God in the Bible, learning the lives of the Saints and reading varied church writings. These all come together with God’s message seeded within your mind for use at a later time.

Many times I’ve been praying with someone only to have a verse or saint quote come to mind that perfectly fits the situation. Has this ever happened to you? If so, and you’ve shared that thought, you’re a prophet.

What is a prophet? You. If you’re open to learning and sharing God’s message. Go be His prophet. Someone on the Road of Faith needs you.
