The Gospels are full of men and women who sought Jesus with all hope. Their last hope being a desperate need of Jesus. The hemorrhaging woman told in 3 of 4 Gospels, the blind, deaf, lame. Parents desperate at the illness of a child. They all needed Jesus, He was their last chance. Desperation of life can drive one to seek God who would not have given Him a moment previously. The desperate prayer of the hemorrhaging woman was my prayer for months. “Lord, but touch the tassel of Your cloak to my daughter and she will be healed.”
God will do great miracles in a time or desperate need with the hope of opening your eyes. The healing from Lupus or cancer or a breaking marriage isn’t near as important as the healing of the soul. But, if it takes this healing to resuscitate the soul, He is willing.
Many today cry out in need of God. “There are no atheists in foxholes.” How many have faced a horrible moment of need, turned to beg God for His help. Then, when things settle, forget what He did. Like the nine lepers in Luke 17:11-29, they look to Jesus for the miracle in the moment, then run away when it is given.
Miracles and healings are breathtaking but does it translate to a want of God when the situation has passed?
God wants you to need him and depend on him. In return, He wants to know you and have an intimate, personal relationship with you. You must want Him at least as much as you need Him. You must need God more than food, water and air combined. The soul must want God more than gold or a great job or a fantastic car or the TV show coming up tonight.
What’s incredible is that God doesn’t need us but He does want us enough to suffer and die a gruesome death at our own hands. His desire is simple. That you want Him as much as He wants you.
Needs drive wants. But, the more we want something, the more we find we need it. The only thing we need is God. Can you say He is the only thing you want?
“In those days you will pray, and I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” (Jeremiah 29:12-13). When things are too overwhelming, stop and look up and say, “God, I need you.” He will show up beyond your wildest expectations.
