Trust God in the Silence

Spread the love

“I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart.” Psalm 40:8

These words remind us that God has written His law, His Word upon our heart. If we are unable to find silence around us, how can the soul ‘hear’ what God has whispered upon its heart? When He speaks words as silent as a heartbeat?

To enter into silence with God presupposes the gift of faith. A soul who is decidedly silent before God is a soul who waits upon his Father. A soul trusting with faith that God will direct his life’s course. Silence is a key characteristic of a soul who fears neither the rejection of men, nor the absence of man’s worldly messages, but rather fears the Lord. Such a soul humbles himself before God, acknowledging and believing that the word of God are more precious than the words of men. This soul does not rely upon worldly advice to his difficult situations. This soul submits himself to God, presenting his dilemmas and struggles to God the Father. Then, with faith waits patiently for divine guidance.

To obtain God’s wisdom, His voice must be heard. To hear God’s voice speaking within your heart, the soul must embrace silence. It is in silence that God speaks and within the silence trust and faith are found and grow.

One of the things that caused me to fall during those months of my daughter’s illness and hospital stays turns out to be my own voice. Yes, my voice was raised in prayer more then than ever before, but all I was hearing was my prattling needs. God had spoke to me in the voice of the Father and Jesus but I became so overwhelmed in prayer that my voice drowned out that of God. My prayers became worldly needs and not trusting in His Will which He had already made clear to me.

It was only when the silence of the dark night of my soul overwhelmed me that I truly started to listen and even pray. I found God waiting for me in the silence. And, in that silence I found peace in my soul. In that silence I heard the voice of God repeat the words He had said many times over the past year, “My son, trust Me.”

“A talkative soul is empty inside. It lacks both the essential virtues and intimacy with God. A deeper interior life, one of gentle peace and of that silence where the Lord dwells, is quite out of the question. A soul that has never tasted the sweetness of inner silence is a restless spirit which disturbs the silence of others” Divine Mercy in My Soul # 118
