Why does God create and allow things which cause pain? The question of the ages for so many souls throughout the millennia.
Falling in a jagger bush (what Pittsburghers call a thorn bush), isn’t fun. It’s one event that for sure can make one scream out to God. But, neither is it fun to ‘walk through’ a ‘thorny’ time of life. I’d hope when life puts a major thorn bush along the soul’s Road of Faith, the soul cries out to God.
But, why would a good Father like God even create the thorns of life?
The 80’s band, Poison may have inadvertently answered this question.
“The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and threw a purple robe around Him.” John 19:2
God created the Ziziphus spina-christi, known as the Christ’s thorn jujube, knowing that this plan would be wound into the crown that would encircle His Son’s head. These thorns are huge and sharp. Imagine the pain of pricking a finger let alone having them pressed into your head. Does this make the thorns evil or give them purpose?
The crown of thorns placed on Jesus’ head before his crucifixion is one of the most iconic symbols of his Passion.
The thorn plant can be viewed the same as the ‘thorny moments’ of life? None of these moments, allowed by God’s permissive Will are meant for evil. Yes, they may be painful but in the Father’s grand scheme, they each serve a great purpose.
The crown of thorns vividly symbolizes the curse of sin being placed on Jesus’s head. It immediately takes the reader back to Genesis, reminding us of why Jesus went to the cross, to take the penalty for sin on our behalf. Therefore, the plant served a purpose to bring Glory to Jesus and take the weight of our sin from our shoulders, placing it all squarely upon Jesus’s head.
The ‘thorns’ of a soul’s life serve a greater purpose for the soul than just to bring pain. Even if that thorn and pain is directly from the enemy, it serves God’s Divine Will. And, the Father’s Divine Will is very simple – these moments are meant to open our eyes and hearts to God’s love, Divine Mercy and presence in our lives (individually.)
From the Crown of Thorns through the Cross and the spear in Jesus’s side, we see the Father’s deep love. Through the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, we see the Father’s love. Through these thorny moments of life, we see God’s love.
