The Wages of Sin

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“The wages of sin are death.” That can be a terrifying thought to meditate upon. We all sin, Psalm 24:16 reminds us that even the righteous man falls seven times. I try but can’t rate myself as righteous by this standard. I fall more times a day than just seven.

Whether you meet the ‘righteous’ standard of just seven falls or fall thousands a times in a day. God in Jesus took the death you deserve to the cross. But, that doesn’t put everything upon His shoulders.

Yea, I know, some will argue that Jesus does everything, we need do nothing. But, look at Proverbs 24 and tell me if there is nothing we need do. Read this and honestly say we can just coast through life as saved always when we simply turn to God once.

“for though they fall seven times, they will rise again” Psalm 24:16

Read again and again, “they will rise again.” Jesus’ cross does everything but to accept that cross, we must – absolutely must – rise again. If we fall and fail to struggle back to our feet we will be “overthrown by calamity” of our sin. That calamity leads us to death. The physical death is nothing when compared to the death as the “wages of our sin.”

Committing sin rewards us with death. A deep spiritual eternal death. What a reward! Ugh! The soul needs to keep this thought close on mind. Not to linger and fear but to be aware of the wages of where that temptation can lead. And, once committed, to remember to stand back up.

Stand up and move forward. Don’t accept the sin as a fall into the grave. Don’t let the enemy put his knee on your back and let you sun kill you. Jesus accepted death as a wage of you sin so that from your sin you may gain abounding grace and eternal life. When you fall, raise your eyes to the cross and fight back to your feet. Struggle forward towards Jesus on that cross. Gain victory in His acceptance of your death. Victory over sin is all about trusting Jesus in His Divine Mercy.

“..with the result that the trespass multiplied; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more” Romans 5:20

“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:11
