God is known by many names throughout the Old Testament. One of my favorites is El Shaddai – God Almighty. He is known by many of His attributes or for what He did.
We should know God by all these names, learning to call upon God in prayer by each as appropriate but more so because it is a wonderful act of love to know someone and call them by their name. Doesn’t it feel great when someone close says your name? It’s the same for God.
The Name to know above all though is the name of Jesus – Immanuel. Immanuel means “God is with us.” This is the love of God that He came to earth to be among us as one of us. This is how we can draw closer to God as He draws close to us. The name of Jesus should ever be on our mind and heart and readily roll from our lips.
Jesus is THE GIFT. Jesus makes Himself a gift to all mankind that God’s love and presence may be real in our time – in our time now.
“Therefore God also highly exalted him
and gave him the name
that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11
