The story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus is very special to me. It is very deep in meaning, I could spend hours contemplating its layers. “The Road of Faith” is by name and spirit connected to this story and in many ways comes out of this story and my walk to Emmaus. find the story of the Road to Emmaus in the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35. Today we conclude our ‘Bible of the Road’ series.
“When He was at the table with them, He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and He vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while He was opening the scriptures to us? That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.” Luke 24:30-35
He revealed Himself in the breaking of the bread, the Eucharist. We have this opportunity every day, and at least weekly, to see Jesus in the Eucharist. That day on retreat, I saw Jesus revealed to me in crystal clear vision. After hearing His words of forgiveness and absolution in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, I got to spend several hours soaking them in before seeing Him again revealed in Eucharistic adoration. My heart was ablaze. I wanted to run to every soul I could meet to tell of what I found out. But, the vision of Jesus and the fire He started didn’t really explode until months later as He continued to fan the flames.
As I found the truth of all Jesus is through Divine Mercy, my heart blazed with joy. My heart has not stopped the inferno blaze to this day. I found the truth of Who Jesus is and my heart can never stop singing His praise. I struggle to not tap everyone on the shoulder to exclaim, “have you heard about Jesus?”
Though Jesus may have “vanished from their sight”, He never left their heart. Since I finally recognized and saw Jesus, He has not left my heart. His voice might not be audible to me every day but He speaks more clearly than ever.
