The first step of taking charge in the fight is to identify an impression as a demonic thought, a task that requires the gift of discernment. Even if correctly identified, an evil thought can still incite us to sin. A demon presents an evil thought to us, and we have the power to put a stop to it. If we do not, but instead allow it to persist, it will lead us to evil actions.
The Bible’s arsenal of verses provides us a means for preventing demonically inspired first movements from developing into full fledged passion and thus into sin.
The goal of a soul, though, is not to simply avoid evil deeds; he seeks not to experience the first movements that incite to sin at all. Do not become a soul that has simply withdrawn from committing sins of action. Rather, the soul should become one who is free of evil thoughts of sin. Such a soul enjoys complete clarity of mind and freedom to drawn into deeper prayer and contemplation of the Holy Trinity.
The ultimate goal is to eliminate the thoughts themselves and to pray and contemplate God more purely.
When tempted with an evil thought, a first movement in your heart toward sin, turn to Jesus in His Holy Scripture. Memorize good verses that arm you to take into battle.
Good examples are from Psalm 91, Jesus’s words when He cast out demons, and so many more.
“do not give the devil a chance to work on you.” Ephesians 4:27
