“Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” Luke 10:38-42
When was the last time you just sat at the feet of the Lord?
I find joy sitting with Him Saturday mornings. Just sitting here with Bible on my knee, coffee at hand and read His word. Sitting and reading isn’t listening though. One can mindlessly read and never hear Him, never stop to listen. When I started my Saturday routine, I would joke with God that He would share too much when all I wanted to do was read His words. I quickly learned to love when He spoke.
Do you just read the words or do you listen? Try using Lectio Divina when reading scripture. Nice way to settle at His knee.
Do you spend time in Eucharistic Adoration? The Bible mornings are nice, but in Adoration, the Lord Himself is present. If you’re looking to sit at His feet, then go, sit at His feet in Eucharistic Adoration. Take your Bible, and a journal. Take your Rosary. But, also just sit and gaze upon our Lord. Set no agenda, just be present with Him. It used to seem strange and somewhat difficult for me to just sit and gaze at Him in sitting on the altar. Now, I enjoy emptying my mind and just focusing upon our Lord’s presence. He shares thoughts with me, but sometimes (and very enjoyably) we both just sit quietly with each other. This is when I come to know that I truly need nothing from our Lord but to be with Him and have Him with me.
The key is to stop being so busy and just sit in His presence. Sit at His feet and let all go of all the lists and things to do, they’ll still be there later but priorities will be aligned more properly.
When we realize the importance and joy of just being with God, Him talking or not, we find the service we do for Him aligns right in our heart.
