Someone recently asked me how to hear God speaking to them. I am not an expert on hearing God’s voice. I know some who know a lot more than I do. Brothers and sisters who hear the words of God and can clearly pass those messages along – prophets. I pondered this question a moment and replied that we must simplify. We must become grounded.
We love our lives at a million miles an hour. We are surrounded by noise, whether audible, technological or just plain busyness. Then, we wonder why we can’t hear God through all this. Our souls are distracted, our minds focused upon the world. It’s like we’re living next to the speakers at a rock concert, then we wonder why we can’t hear God.
We chase worldly treasures and gifts, focused upon the next thing of the world. Jesus told us that where our treasure is, that’s where our heart is. And, where our heart is, that’s the treasure we seek. The world is a hollow and empty treasure chest. If you won a billion dollars, you’d just find yourself more empty.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21
So, my reply was simply to simplify. Shut out the noises and distractions. When we cut out all that isn’t God, hushing the noise of the world and of our own heart, we may (probably will) find God’s still small voice, whispering quietly within our soul.
“And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him,” 1 Kings 19:13
