Road to Emmaus (and back)

Spread the love

Luke 23:13-35 tells of the encounter two disciples had with Jesus on the road to a small town called Emmaus. This is a story of our lives. We have all found ourselves walking this journey.

We find these disciples leaving Jerusalem as they run away in despair. Jesus had been crucified and died but despite hearing that morning of a miracle, they are still running away – lacking trust and faith.

We set our hearts upon Jesus and focus upon what we believe is God’s Will. We see Jesus as the Overcomer of the world but forget that His goal is even bigger than the newspaper.

We continue our journey down this road as we learn to see Jesus for Who He truly is and all He is really offering. We learn through the Bible, Mass, the Sacraments, Divine Mercy and the Rosary and so many other ways. In each of these Jesus often hides Himself from our view as He teaches us. He came beside me in 2011 as I felt my faith collapse. Hidden from view, Jesus walked with me and taught me again how to trust in God.

We come to times when our hearts are on fire – we feel our hearts “burning within us” as we come to realize all Jesus has taught and is teaching us. We realize in these moment how close Jesus is to our side and may even recognize Him.

Then, we have those moments during Holy Mass that Jesus fully reveals Himself to us in “the breaking of the bread.” In that moment at the altar or while we receive Him in the Eucharist, we ‘see’ Jesus fully in His glory. I always love to hear my brothers talk of these moments and treasure these clear moments in my own heart.

Now, the question is how do we react? Do we sit in our little safe spot and hold these moments to ourselves? Do we maybe even wonder if what we witnessed was real? Or, do we react as the two disciples? They saw everything in a moment of clarity of soul and instantly ran the seven miles back to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples of their experience and to exclaim joyful that Jesus Christ is indeed risen!!!

The Road of Faith blog exists in part due to my experiences with the Road to Emmaus. Emmaus weighs heavily upon my heart and faith. It is through brothers walking alongside me both to and back from Emmaus that my desire to share my stories and reflections of my personal Road of Faith.
