The goal of every soul should be to be completely one, United fully with its God. A total union, like the Trinity, a union where the soul and God are both two in one – distinct and interpenetrate one another. As water is completely penetrated, permeated and utterly saturated by the light. Yet, the water remains distinct from the light.
The same as a drop of water fallen into the the center of the vast oceans is still a single drop but now is indistinguishable from the oceans.
The soul becomes like the log. It sits in pile with all the other wood, crusty and filthy with its sin. God throws the light into the fire that is the Holy Spirit. As the fire touches the edges of the log, it feels it’s it’s dirt and filth being burned away – the scale of its bark burns brightly as the flame begins to send its heat, its very essence upon the log. When the soul comes first in contact with the essence of God, it’s sin is consumed in the cleansing fire of mercy.
All the moisture and inner impurities then begin to burn away. The deepest ‘sap’ of its most endeared and chronic sins bubbles to the outside, to flash in the consuming flames. The fire and heat of the Holy Spirit brings out all the deepest sins and impurities to the forefront of the light and burns them away.
Finally, all impurities baked away, the Fire enkindles the life from without, transforming the wood into itself. As the log is consumed with the fire, it becomes the fire itself and begins to burn brightly.
The log now immersed in the fire first begins to smoke and burns with red flames. But, as it unites it is consumed. The ashes of itself left behind before the flame touched the wood now burns with a tremendous heat, the light that emanates from it is bright and white hot. The fire is so hot that any new wood that comes close begins to smoke and catch fire. The wood doesn’t even have to touch the burning log, the fire from this log is bringing so hotly that the new wood can begin to burn just by being close to the flame.
You have the ability to burn this brightly! Hole Spirit the Fire fall and consume all who read this post.
Ed,
We do a fire exercise on the ON Fire retreat with the wood and this reflection.
Just did this last Thursday night as I am leading On Fire for ST. Louise/St. Joan of Arc
