“At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say”
“OUR FATHER…”
A great priest of Pittsburgh, whom I’m very fond of, came to our CMF men’s group one Saturday to talk about the Lord’s Prayer. He started with words I’ve heard hundreds of time in Mass but never contemplated, “..we dare to say…”
Have you ever meditated on the words of the “Our Father”? These are the words that Jesus taught his disciples to pray with. They contain a number of profound truths that can reach the depths of our soul. The first words of the prayer can provide for us hours of meditation.
A great saint (I think St Theresa of Avila but I couldn’t find the quote) once said that she could basically get lost on these first two words of the Lord’s Prayer – “Our Father.”
Have you ever slowed down your praying of the Lord’s Prayer, focusing on just these two words?
‘We dare to say,” “Our Father…”
Deep sinner that I am, how dare I even approach God? More so, knowing my sinfulness, how dare I call God Father. But, this is precisely what Jesus taught us to do. To elevate us above whom we see ourselves as, and to show us the deep love of God.
Before any thing we do or say, “Our Father.” Focus on these two words and the fullness of their meaning in your life. Don’t rush to the next line, stop and rest in the live these two words carry. Stop and focus upon what it means that God, all mighty Creator, wants you to come to Him first as ‘Our Father.’
“Our Father…”
