For whom do you live? Who do you want people to see or think of when they see you?
Nobody but Jesus.
Who and what I am isn’t of much concern if my life isn’t based on Jesus Christ. What am I showing if I am not living for God? If my deeds and acts of mercy aren’t given directly to Jesus, what are they?
“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-3
I would add that if people don’t see Jesus in me, my words and deeds are empty and devoid of reason.
What is your desire when people think of you? When you leave a room, do people feel uplifted and closer to Jesus simply because you had been there?
I have had situations occur that highlight this effect. People would be telling a raunchy joke or having a conversation that wasn’t necessarily PG in nature and when I would walk into the room, it would stop. People would stop using profanities because I was present, and some would even learn not to use the Lord’s Name in vain and apologize if they did.
Why? I would say the answer is simple. I strived to live my Christian faith at all times. Every word and action were directed to pleasing my Lord, Jesus. At work, it is hard to do this overtly, but that didn’t stop me from being who I am all the time. That alone was enough to make changes of heart.
A few people became comfortable enough to ask me for prayers or sometimes, I’d receive requests for spiritual direction or just guidance or help in a difficult situation.
How did this happen? Simply because I made my focus Jesus. I tried to live every aspect of work and home life with the same singular focus, glorifying the Lord. Through this dedication, joy flowed into my life. As joy rains in, like a river, it must continue to flow. The peace and joy I was enjoying became apparent to others.
Live for nothing but Jesus. Make your focus in work, home, friends, and strangers all about bringing glory to God. You don’t need to preach it, just live it and it Jesus will preach through you. Let the Sacred Heart of Jesus transform your heart and life that your hearts beat in unison.
