“The woman left behind her water jar and went off to the town, where she said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done. Could this be the Christ?”” John 4:28-29
The Woman at the Well is a very well known and popular moment in the Bible. This was Jesus’ coming out party in a sense. This is the moment He made Himself and Who He is known to the public. The woman met Jesus in a desolate part of her life. Alone and castoff from society, she was gathering water during the heat of the day. She came lost and mired in sin, outcast from all with no one to befriend or love her.
Jesus gave her Himself. He gave her Love Himself. And, her life changed in a snap. In the course of a single midday conversation, the woman’s life and eternity changed forever. She became one of the first evangelists of the new kingdom of the Messiah.
In a snap – BAM – her life changed. She came with empty water jars and left filled with the Living Water.
I know many who have experienced this snap change – met Jesus, immediately left the old life behind, going away from that moment a new man/woman. The Emmaus retreat weekend has that effect on souls. One of my closest friends went to a men’s conference, found Jesus and left forever changed. Like the woman at the well, Robert knew the Messiah was ‘to come’, but that day, Jesus came in full view and changed Robert in a snap. Michael went to Emmaus, met the Savior of the world through the Holy Spirit and bam! Today he is a deacon, evangelizing through his life.
Have you had this experience? has the Savior come to you and told you everything about yourself? How did you react? Did you drop your empty jars and run back to tell everyone Who you just met?
Or, like me, has your life since meeting the Savior been a battle to leave behind your old self? Even if this is you, know that once you meet this man, Jesus, you ARE changed. There is no going back. His love and mercy fills you to the brim and beyond. Let go your jars and look up to see the Messiah.
