I Know You

“Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.” So he went with him.” Mark 5:22-24

There is a scene in ‘The Chosen’ depicting this moment. This scene tears me up every time I watch it. Not to spoil it if you haven’t seen the episode yet, but…

See, earlier in the episode, Ja’irus is talking with a Pharisee in the synagogue. The Pharisee had witnessed and wrote his thoughts of Jesus’ sermon on the mount. Ja’irus admits to having read the account and explains how he had studied Torah about who this man might be. He doesn’t say it, but, Ja’irus and the Pharisee see Jesus may be the Messiah.

Later, Ja’irus’ daughter lies dying in bed. Ja’irus desperately seeks a way to heal her. He find the Pharisee and suddenly realizes Jesus can heal her. They find Jesus in Simon’s home. Ja’irus sees Jesus, tears well in his eyes and his breath catches as he falls to his knees at the feet of Jesus. His words overwhelm when I hear them, “I know you.”

How would you know Jesus?

The same way as the Ja’irus in ‘The Chosen’, study the written accounts of Jesus in the Gospels, the ‘Torah’ and other books of the Old Testament. Read the accounts in the Acts of the Apostles and the letters. Look for Him in the Book of Revelation. Speak to others who have heard of Jesus, have ‘seen’ Him in various ways. Have faith as did Ja’irus.

Look for Him, seek Jesus out.

When Ja’irus met Jesus, despite having never seen it met Him before, He knew Him. He had no doubt of Who and What Jesus is. He knew beyond a doubt of what Jesus could do. Despite never having met the man, Ja’irus recognized and knew Him.

If you came before Jesus, what would be your reaction? Just a man standing before you, would you know this man to be the Lord?

Study Him, seek Him, speak to Him and to others who know Him that when you come before Jesus, you too will be able to say, “I know You.”
