Humility of Mary

Spread the love

“And he came to her and said, “Greetings, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.  The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus.” Luke 1:28-31

“Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”  1:38

Saint Augustine said, “Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues, hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.”

Father. Sopoćko told St. Faustina, “Without humility, we cannot be pleasing to God” Divine Mercy in my soul #270

Saint Faustina wanted her soul to be firmly rooted in God.  St. Faustina told her Lord Jesus that she wished to be hidden from everyone but Him: “I want to be a tiny violet, hidden in the grass, unknown in a magnificent enclosed garden in which beautiful lilies and roses grow.” She explained that the “beautiful rose and the lovely lily can be seen from afar, but in order to see the little violet, one has to bend low; only its scent gives it away” (Diary #591).

The Blessed Mother is our example of human humility.  She could have grasped at all God was doing through her but in humility let God shine and quietly participates in His Divine Will.  She is our lovely flower shining beautifully and swaying with the wind of the Father’s Will.
