“It is not for you to know how this will come about. Your duty is to be faithful to My grace and to do always what is within your power and what obedience allows you to do … (Diary, 1650).
We all find times that we question God. “Why did my dad die, despite our prayers?” “Why did my daughter have to get sick?” “Why is abortion permitted? Why so many evils are allowed?”
Is it original sin that makes questioning God something that seems almost genetically engrained? I want to believe and trust without doubt. There is no reason why it shouldn’t be simple for me. After all the things that have occurred through my life and especially over the past decade, there should be no doubt, only total, unwavering trust.
The Road of Faith journey that we are walking is heavily traveled, Not just by ordinary men, sinners and doubters, like me. This road has been trodden by some of the greats of our faith. St. Faustina, trusts’ saint, questioned and doubted God often. The Lord came to her, gave her the image to paint, spoke to her about what to write of Divine Mercy, He was her personal spiritual director and she His personal secretary of Mercy. St. Peter and his buddies saw everything Jesus did, heard all His parables and sat around the fire at night listening to things of which we are not privy. Yet, not one failed to trust Him at some point, especially in those three dark days of the passion and death.
We are all walking along the road of faith. We are all learning to trust Jesus as we take just one step at a time. One step, not rushed, one easy step at a time. If there are potholes, no worries, every road has potholes and bumps – trust me, after more than 2,500 traveled in the past six months, not one road outside Florida has been smooth. Just keep moving forward, one step followed by the next. Don’t look down the road or worry around the next bend. If the Lord wants you to know what lies ahead, He will tell you. Otherwise, know the Road of Faith is set before you, and no matter how it may seem, the end of the road stands the Father. He is just waiting for you, watching the Road (and every step you take) for you to crest the hill.
No ‘why?’ No ‘how?’ No worries. One step…
