Hearing God’s Voice

Spread the love

My prayer for all is what I sign my books with, “listen for God’s voice – John 10:27.”

Sitting last night at an event in a church we had visited, I struck up a conversation with a woman sitting beside me. After a few minutes of talking, she asked ‘when you hear God talking to you, how do you know His Voice?’ I gave her some thoughts and stories of how God has spoken to me and how I knew it was Him and not my imagination.

Since last night, I can’t stop thinking of this. Connie and I discussed it heavily on the way back to the RV. I texted the priest who did the talks at the event and closed our texts with the thought, “once you hear and recognize God’s voice, you can’t get enough of it. You want to hear Him more and more.”

First off, you must know God and draw near to Him if you hope to hear Him speaking. You can’t hear someone who is distant. You must be in the Bible alot, every free minute. And, you must be praying. God is more apt to speak to you if you are talking to Him. Of course, He may not wait for you to start a conversation. But, when you’re conversing, you absolutely must stop running your mouth and listen.

God speaks in many ways. For me personally, He has talked audibly, within my heart, through others and in the Bible and prayer. How He speaks to you may vary for sure and could even be different day to day due to need. I think God speaks with more urgency and clarity in more dire times. Keep in mind that silence is also a powerful form of communication as well. Sometimes, only in the silence does a soul try to hear.

If you want to hear God, draw near to Him. He’ll draw aside you. Get to know Him and start listening. The more you hear whispers and small things, the more you’ll hear. You have to recognize His voice before you can hear what God is saying. You have to admit that He can, will and is speaking to you.

Stop and ask God to help you hear His voice.
