“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”” Luke 1:37-38
“And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” – Again he went away for the second time and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words.” Matthew 26:39, 42-44
We come full circle – Fiat to Fiat.
The Blessed Mother Mary gives her Fiat to the Holy Spirit at the Annunciation. Then, in the garden, Jesus, the Son, gives His Fiat to the Father.
Fiat to Fiat we see pure examples of total submission and surrender to the Divine Will of God. We see how the soul strive for life and sanctification. The Blessed Mother sanctified by her Fiat in the power of her Son’s Cross. Jesus sanctified all of us through His Fiat in the garden up through Calvary.
Fiat – a formal authorization or proposition; a decree – origin: from Latin, ‘let it be done’, from Latin, ‘let it be done’, from ‘fieri’: be done or made’.
I pray over this meditation this morning, thinking of how Mary’s Fiat connects with Jesus’ Fiat and connects to us. God puts on my heart that the soul’s Fiat is necessary for sanctification. Without the Fiat, the soul holds back itself from God. The soul prevents God from fully giving Himself and His sanctifying Holy Spirit. The Spirit can work in the soul only to the level at which the soul gives his Fiat. A soul who turns his backs fully from God can stop God’s grace completely. Even a sinful soul can be quenched in the fire of the Spirit. Even in darkest sin, this soul can give his Fiat of trust in God’s Divine Mercy. This soul opens the floodgates of Mercy washing the darkness from himself and turning it pure white as God’s own grace. This is done by a simple fiat – a yes and acceptance, allowing God to sanctify him.
All souls, even the darkest most vile of sin-filled souls can give their fiat to God allowing Him to pour His sanctifying grace and Divine Mercy through Heaven’s ocean of Mercy. Full Fiat accepts ALL God has to offer the soul.
I write this as a first hand witness to this power. I was once that dark, vile soul. So sinful I believed God could never love me. My life fully turned away from God. One day I saw Him in my need, my soul gave a small cry of fiat to God and in an instant everything changed. Year upon year and day after day, I’ve given further fiat to God. I have only scratched the surface of Mary’s or Jesus’ Fiats, but I thank God I’ve at least been able to give this fiat.
Have you given your Fiat to God? Have you looked to God and told Him, “not mine, but Your Will be done”?
