Faith on the Road – St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church – New Orleans, LA

Spread the love

Our last leg of our southeastern trip takes us back to New Orleans, Louisiana and St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church.

St. Mary’s Assumption Church is a National Historic Landmark church in New Orleans, Louisiana. The church was completed in 1860, built for the swelling German Catholic immigrant population in the Lower Garden District section of the city (the church across the street, Saint Alphonsus Church, was built at the same time for the swelling Irish Catholic immigrant population in the same area). Both churches are extremely beautiful and ornate. The Celebrant Priest told us that everything in the church is original and almost all transported from Germany to New Orleans. The only piece missing is the 12th Station of the Cross – Jesus dies on the cross. This was damaged in 1965 by Hurricane Betsy – ‘Billion Dollar Betsy’. The only piece damaged by this hurricane that was not salvageable.
