The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine (Spanish: Catedral basílica de San Agustín) is a historic cathedral in St. Augustine, Florida, and the seat of the Catholic Bishop of St. Augustine.
The basilica was constructed over five years (1793–1797), and designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on April 15, 1970.
Built by the Spanish, their love of God is clearly evident in their worship through the design of this church. The iconography is breathtaking throughout.
The architecture and paintings draw you back to 1700s Spanish Florida. it is very easy to glance around and see the original Spanish Catholics worshiping at Mass right beside you even today.
Of course, the tribute to our modern saint, my patroness, St. Faustina caught my eye. On the wall opposites the Blessed Sacrament side chapel sits an age old confessional. Over the the confessional is a quote from St. Faustina’s diary, “there is no misery that could be a match for My Mercy.” Divine Mercy in my soul # 1273
Imagine the number of sins and great mercy poured forth from this confessional over the past 227 years. Divine Mercy overflowing all misery.
The Basilica is beautiful but what’s impressive about St. Augustine is this is the first parish in the US. The congregation was established in 1565, and is the oldest Christian congregation in the United States. Wow? 455 years of Catholic presence and more important, 5 1/2 centuries of the Lord’s Eucharistic presence in out nation.
As I prayed the Lord’s Prayer and spoke to God before Mass, I wondered home many millions of times the Lord’s Prayer has been said in the parish and Basilica, millions of Rosaries prayed. God’s grace flooding the land.
Can I just say what a relief to find someone who genuinely knows what they’re talking about on the net. You definitely realize how to bring an issue to light and make it important. More people need to check this out and understand this side of the story. I can’t believe you’re not more popular since you most certainly possess the gift.
