The cornerstone of the present church was laid in 1892. Eleven years later after years of dedication, hard work, and commitment – the first Mass was celebrated on Easter Sunday 1903. The Montpelier Daily Journal chronicled the event as a celebration for the entire city, not solely the Catholic community. “They have built a sanctuary that will be a joy and an inspiration not only to them but to their children and their children’s children for generations to come.”

Located in Montpelier, the nation’s smallest state capitol. This is a small church with a basilica-like presence that is worth the visit.

St. Augustine of Hippo 13 November 354 – 28 August 430), was a theologian and philosopher of Berber origin and the bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa. His writings influenced the development of Western philosophy and Western Christianity. St. Augustine is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers of the Latin Church. His many important works include The City of God, On Christian Doctrine, and Confessions.
