Santa Maria de la Paz is an in incredibly beautiful Catholic Church located in Santa Fe, NM. Established by Archbishop Robert F. Sanchez January 1, 1990. The Archbishop placed the new faith community under the protection of Our Lady of Peace—Santa Maria de la Paz—in his prayerful hope for peace among all peoples. The first Holy Mass was celebrated on January 13, 1990 in the gym of Piñon Elementary School at 2921 Camino de Los Caballos, approximately two miles from the current church site. Ground was broken on February 28, 1993 for the current church building. The first liturgy in new Parish took place on June 11, 1994 and the church was formally dedicated by Archbishop Michael Sheehan on July 10, 1994.

This beautiful building is architecturally southwestern, showing its traditional Spanish style in its adobe walls. It stands tall against the blue Santa Fe sky. But, within, wow. The decor gives a strong feel of the tribal nation surrounding these lands. The saints line the walls in support and celebration of the Mass and Sacraments within. The altar is gorgeous with a cross inset during Mass with the Crucifix that leads the faithful into and out of Mass. There is a beautiful side fresco honoring Our Lady and a small adoration chapel at the rear of the church. The left side wall hides another set of pews, frescoes and an altar that would house most churches we’ve visited in the past 18 months.

The pastor is a father of his flock. We watched him take time after Mass to bless a young boy’s rosary and patiently teach him the sign of the cross at the baptismal font. This is a lovely community with so many young families. This community has a bright future in its children.
