Our journey in our RV along the road of faith takes us outside Florida for her first time. We are heading northward with our first stop being near Savannah, Georgia. Savannah boasts of the beautiful and incredible Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
Located in downtown Savannah, the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is awe-inspiring. Truly a building who’s architecture lifts the Spirt to God’s glory in the way of the old European cathedrals of Notre Dame and others.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is an iconic symbol of Savannah, Georgia, gracing the skyline with its towering steeples – a view valued by our residents and visitors alike. The church was dedicated on its current site on April 30, 1876. A fire in 1898 destroyed much of the structure. It was rebuilt quickly and re-opened in 1900. The Cathedral represents historically noteworthy architecture as well as over a century of faith and civic traditions in Savannah. The Cathedral is open to the community of Savannah as well as to hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. The Cathedral remains in the top 10 historic sites to visit in the United States. Visitors continue to rate the Cathedral as, “a must see,” during their trips to Savannah.
They do offer guided tours outside of Mass hours and do have a traditional Latin rite Mass – when we visited, this Mass was celebrated by a very young and reverential priest. I was inspired just by the glimpses of his actions – he greeted everyone and even stopped to hear confession off the the side of the entry. I didn’t know him or speak to him, but I saw a beautiful and holy soul.
