Faith in the Storm

Spread the love

“As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep.” Matthew 8:23–24

Often times, we think God is asleep at the wheel when storms are raging in our lives and against us. We feel as if the storm is going to overwhelm us and we will perish.

This was pretty much where I was when my daughter was most sick. I prayed and prayed for God to do something but it seemed God was asleep. He wasn’t listening or hearing my cries.

“And He woke up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were afraid and amazed, and said to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?”” Luke 8:24-25

There are a few points on my heart in this. First, like the disciples, like me, we need to call out to God for help in our stormy times. No doubt, He is listening and aware of the situation. But, unlike the disciples and myself, we must trust. The disciples were afraid they’d perish despite the fact that Jesus was IN the boat with them. Do you think he’d let them and Himself come to harm? For me, though Jesus was silent, He had a reason. I should have trusted more. He wouldn’t allow me to come to harm when He is so close. But, the storm raged and pressed us into a corner into which fear and despair took reign.

So, what was Jesus’ reaction? The rebuke isn’t to condemn but to show the faith the disciples and I should have had. Did have until fear crashed in.

In the storm it is easy to take your eyes off Jesus and see the crashing waves and lightning. The thunder of the moment brings worry which grows to fear. But, trust, trust and trust. God is in the boat right with you. He has the power to calm the storm. If He seems asleep, there is a reason. So, trust Him more. And call upon Him, not from a state of fear but from a foundation of trust.
