Does God will something for every moment?
I read of a philosophy professor who said, “God’s will is not written somewhere up on the heavens. Since God gave us free will, He wants and expects us to use it. As long as we don’t expressly violate God’s revealed Will and laws, we can pretty much decide for ourselves what we want to do.” Sounds attractive right? That doesn’t make this right even though it sounds like a good thought.
Does God will something in every moment, even the smallest? Yes, otherwise what meaning would obedience have?
It’s not conceivable that obedience should apply only to certain aspects or times of our lives, even though many may want to see it that way. It’s not like a part of the day is duty, another part is for prayer and the rest I get to do what I want. That just can’t be right. A philosophy of many Christians seems to be God is God everywhere but in the bedroom or checkbook or when a movie is on.
Obedience is an attitude of life. It should influence and permeate our very existence. Every part of our life and day should be lived in obedience to God’s Divine Will.
As I wrote in a prior reflection, Jesus wants our yes to be like His, constant and total. Obedience to the Father means so much to Jesus that He makes it an expression of love. It is the same with Mary. She lives in the Fiat. She doesn’t split her time between God’s work and kicking her feet up to watch a movie. She lives as the handmaid of the Lord, living always under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
“Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lordour God” Psalm 123:2
This is how our Blessed Mother lives – with her eyes continually upon the Lord. Her life is loved with one question, “what would You have me do?”
Do you keep your gaze upon the hand of the Lord at all times? Is God the God of every aspect of your life?
