St. Michael the Archangel is described in the Bible, in the books of Joshua, Daniel, Jude, and Revelation, as a warrior angel who engages in spiritual combat. The word archangel  means “angel of the highest rank.” Most angels in the Bible are portrayed as messengers, but Michael is described in all three books as contending, fighting, or standing against evil spirits and principalities.

“Once when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing before him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you one of us, or one of our adversaries?”  He replied, “Neither; but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Joshua 5:13-14

“The prince of the kingdom of Persia thwarted me for twenty-one days, but finally Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me.” “There is no one to lend me support except Michael, your prince.” Daniel 10:13, 21

“Even the archangel Michael, when he engaged in an argument with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but instead said: “May the Lord rebuke you!”” Jude 1:9

“Next, war broke out in heaven, with Michael[a] and his angels in combat against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back” Revelation 12:7

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world  seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. .

O glorious prince St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts,
guardian of souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine King and our admirable conductor,
you who shine with excellence and superhuman virtue deliver us from all evil,
who turn to you with confidence and enable us by your gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day. Amen
