“But who do you say that I am?”

“When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”” Matthew 16:13-16

Who do you say Jesus is? The world calls Him a nice guy or a decent teacher or philosopher among other things. Protestants like to say He is a friend. All this may be true but He is so much more. Jesus is the King of kings – Revelation 19:11-16. He is the second person of the Holy Trinity and God incarnate as man. He is this and more.

But, the question remains for you to ponder upon (and if you like, answer on The Road of Faith blog site comments) – who do YOU say Jesus is?

I was faced with this question years ago when I was discovering my new found Catholic faith. I was born and raised in the Church, given all the Sacraments, but, I never once consider God let alone Who He is. Then, one night I read this verse from Matthew 16:13-16, and I stopped.

As I reread this question, I answered all the ‘text book’ responses – God, the Messiah, the Lamb etc. Then, sitting there, I could hear Jesus asking me, “But who do you say that I am?” I sat for a long time…. Finally responding, “You are MY God and Savior.” I felt the pleasure of God in that moment, not as much because of the words of the answer, but because of my honesty and heart in the answer.

Sit before the tabernacle or a crucifix or in adoration and answer this question to the Lord. “Who do YOU say that I am?”
