“But Moses said to God, “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”He said further, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you: this is my name forever, and this my title for all generations.’” Exodus 3:13-15
Wow! Talk about a power scene of the Bible! This is a BOOM a thousand times over.
Moses was overwhelmed. Can you even imagine being in his place? But, to have the audacity to ask the Name of God? Maybe it wasn’t audacity, but, fear. Either way. “Hey, I see this burning bush talking to me. I know this is God’s voice but I need Your Name.” Wow.
The burning bush and God speaking from it should be enough. But, Moses dares ask God’s Name. Today, we are blessed to know the Name of Whom God is forever known – YHWH. And, the Name above all Names – Jesus. As I pray over Exodus 3:13-15 and ponder the Names of God, I am overawed. To know the name of someone makes things personal. God shares His most personal and intimate ‘secret’ with us. His Name.
I started this morning’s prayer as Moses did, asking, “Who are You, Lord?” He shares Exodus 3:14 with me, as I ponder the wow factor of this, it is God Who turns this around on me and ask, “who are you?”
I sit for a long moment thinking how to answer this question. I know it’s a trick question of sorts. God knows the answer but wants to see if I do. I sit longer. He knows my name, of course. Dah! It can’t be that. I feel the answer is hidden in Scripture, so I search.
“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” John 1:12
“you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”” Romans 8:15
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1
That’s it! Who I am? I am Your son!!!
God gave us His Name that we may know the Father but more. That we should know OUR name. A child must know the name of their father to know who they are. I am Corbett because my father gave me his life and name that is would be his son and call him dad. God the Father gave me His Name, Jesus gave His Name and life that I could and should call His Father my own. I am a child of God the Father because it is His Name I bear.
Find joy in knowing God loves you so much that He shared His Name with you. You are no stranger, you are a child of God. You are a son or daughter of the Most High. He is not just a title to you, He has a Name. YHWH – Jesus.
“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts” Jeremiah 15:16
