The story of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus is very special to me. It is very deep in meaning, I could spend hours contemplating its layers. “The Road of Faith” is integrally connected to this story and in many ways comes out of this story and my walk to Emmaus. find the story of the Road to Emmaus in the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35. We will focus on this story over the next few weeks’ ‘Bible of the Road’ series.
“Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking downcast.” Luke 24:13-17
I’ve heard people complain that these disciples could be running off alone when all the other disciples remain in Jerusalem. But, how often do we find the events of the world overwhelming us? Ever just want to get away and hide from something going on in your life? This is where we find the two disciples today. The events of the day are overwhelming.
The past three days have been so much that they couldn’t even see Jesus right in front of them. I know many times events have taken a turn in which I missed seeing Jesus, I failed to keep my faith in His words. I knew what He had told me but in the moment, totally forgot His words meant to give me strength and prepare me. I’ve been in that time when I was talking about God and at God without realizing I was talking to God. When I couldn’t hear Jesus speaking to me, despite Him talking directly to me.
When my daughter was first diagnosed with Lupus, God, in Jesus and the Father spoke directly to me. They didn’t speak only in my heart but, in actual words. I heard what they said in each instance but never listened. The Trinity gave me words of hope, trust and power, yet, like these disciples, I was so caught up in my woes that I didn’t recognize God before me. They told me to have faith and trust – I ran away to my Emmaus, losing both.
I sign all my books with the words, “listen to the voice of Jesus. John 10:27.” Listen, don’t just hear. Recognize Jesus in every moment, watch for times when He walks beside you. Keep hope and faith.
Don’t be downcast.
