“That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea.” John 21:7
I sit and think of where Peter’s heart and mind are on this day. He denied Jesus, he utterly failed in his God assigned role as leader and betrayed his promise to follow Jesus, even to death. He was running away from his failures and role by returning to his former profession. He went fishing, the other followed along. But, I imagine Peter was not great company through the night. Not only was he upset at failing Jesus, but, again, he couldn’t catch a single fish.
Then, the dawn comes and a stranger yells out to cast the net over the side again. And, bam, a huge catch. Something look familiar? Peter saw it and I can imagine him staring at the man on the beach – he knew. But, it took the prompting of his friend John to cast his cares and worries aside. John says, “it is the Lord!” And Peter dives immediately into the water. The others in the boat arrived at the shore about the same time as Peter, but that meant little to him.
Peter reacted not in his fearful heart or with mindful worry and hesitancy. He knew this was Jesus before him and that all he wanted was to get to him. Reminiscent of when he stepped out impossibly to walk on the water. Such strong faith and desire poured from Peter’s actions.
How is your faith? When you’ve failed, see that you’re responsible for the scourging and crucifixion, do you run and hide? Going back to who you once were? Jesus is calling for the shore to you as well. He calls out to remind you of those epic moments at His side. To remind your heart of the warmth and joy of His presence. This is also one huge reason I recommend journaling. By writing down and re-reading those ‘mountaintop” experiences, you are reminded of the joys when you feel lost or alone.
Whether through a journal, the Bible, prayer or otherwise, Jesus wants you to remember who you are to Him? He wants you to recall the good ole days at His side. He wants to ignite or re-ignite your faith.
Let it go and leap into the sea!
What stood out to you?
