Read Matthew 18:23-35, the parable of the unforgiving servant. We know this story. A man owed a debt that would take lifetimes to pay back, I had heard the 10,000 talents was equal to over a hundred million dollars. An impossible amount for a normal worker to ever pay back. Yet, when he begged for mercy, simply patience, his master forgave his full debt. The servant turned around and demanded a lesser sum from a fellow servant who owed him.
We all know the outcome of this. The first servant was called back to the master and condemned to pay back his debt.
God has freely given His Divine Mercy. Not just to forgive the amount we need but whole oceans of mercy – the whole abyss of His mercy. When we come before God’s throne asking to be forgiven our worldly debt to Him, Jesus pours out torrents of mercy, He opens all the floodgates of Heaven. We ask for a pittance in comparison to what God offered from the cross.
But, there is a catch.
“To whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.” Luke 12:48
God gives to each of us ALL of His abundant mercy. In return for His grace and mercy, He demands that we pay it forward. We who have received His mercy must give it away. If we take this gift of Divine Mercy and do not give mercy and forgiveness to everyone we meet, deserved it not, will lose the gift given us and be remanded to pay back our full debt. a debt we can never repay.
But as impossible as forgiveness of this level is, this is an easy thing. From God, mercy is given whether asked for or not. Mercy from us is the same. We need to forgive everyone even if they don’t ask, and even if they don’t reciprocate or accept it. We need to give our mercy to those who may not pay it forward.
We are called to surrender totally to the Divine Mercy of God…at the level to which Jesus surrendered. Total. When those to whom we are called to be merciful attack us, ask the Father in Heaven to forgive them. Even to the point of taking upon their anger ourselves. Offering our soul for their salvation. When one to whom we offer forgiveness turns their back on it, give it double. Pray for them. Jesus told His disciples to shake off the dust from those who don’t accept their message. But, then Jesus went to the cross to show us that He was paying the cost even those who don’t want or accept mercy. Jesus spoke to me, telling me that this is the example He wants of each of us today.
Total surrender to Divine Mercy, “throwing it haphazardly” upon souls who like us, don’t deserve it.
When we give away all the mercy God has given us, the Lord basks us in more mercy than we could fathom.
Jesus speaks to each of you through me today, “Surrender to My Mercy.”
“I am more generous toward sinners than toward the just. It was for their sake that I came down from Heaven; it was for their sake that My Blood was spilled. Let them not fear to approach Me; they are most in need of My mercy”. Divine Mercy in My Soul # 1279
“Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord[a] has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love” Colossians 3:13-14
