A Psalm A Day..

Spread the love

“Psalms on the Road has been a Sunday feature for the past two years. Together we’ve read 105 of them so far. We only skip a Psalm on special Sundays often enveloped within a Novena. There are a total of 150 Psalms. They are songs and poems focusing upon God. They sing of praise to God, sorrow and repentance and strength. They sing of struggle and victory.

“A Psalm A Day” is a powerful way to draw closer to God as you push the enemy away.

The ultimate Psalm reading and prayer is the Divine Office – the official prayer of the Church. The Liturgy of the Hours is the daily prayer of the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer.  The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and prayer.

Several years ago, I wondered how to read the Bible in a focused manner. Where to start and how to continue?

I started with my favorites, the Gospels of John and Matthew. And, Psalm 1. Each day a new Psalm along with whatever book or letter I was reading from Old or New Testament.

I’ve gone through the full book of Psalms a few times. Sometimes, I flip to and spend days in a specific Psalm. I personally love Psalms 51, 95 and 144. Oh, and Psalm 1 for its simplicity and focus of the soul upon God.

As the soul reads and prays the Psalms, the Psalms expose to the soul a depth of God’s heart. The more the soul prays the Psalms and focuses upon their heart, the more God shows Himself to the soul.

So, I highly recommend that you pray the Psalms. Just one a day. If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a Psalm a day will keep the enemy away but more importantly draw your soul closer to God.
