A Prayer Retreat

“She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”” Luke 10:39. 41-42

Prayer on one hand is a deeply personal thing between God and the soul.

Some of my most beautiful moments of prayer is time spent in silence. Sitting in Adoration before our Lord, many times, I just sit and stare in silent awe. Sometimes, we just sit together in quiet. Of course, often in those times, Jesus speaks to me. Removing the worldly distractions opens the soul’s ears to actually hear His voice.

One of the greatest blessings of the life to which God has led Connie and I is the removal of so many distractions. For me, the past three years have been like a constant retreat. God has removed so many distractions and excuses from my life, allowing me to focus upon Him.

I began a tradition at the start of our journey to get up early Sunday morning. Grab a coffee and my Bible, often one of my copies of St. Faustina’s diary and sit to spend time with God. So many times in the silence of my mind on these quiet mornings, God speaks clearly within my heart. He shares so many things from the words I read. Reflecting me back to bygone days or along my current Road of Faith – and, a few times, He’s taken my reflection into the future days.

It is on these early mornings that God teaches me how to pray. Pray by just listening, letting prayer come naturally from my soul in praise and realizing what it is that God wants of my life.

Each new morning, my prayers help me learn how to become a prayer warrior. It’s taken many years with still a ways to go, to start to feel the warrior’s armor with which prayer surrounds me.

Do you spend time in silence “at the knee” of Jesus?

“Prayer.-A soul arms itself by prayer for all kinds of combat. In whatever state the soul may be, it ought to pray. A soul which is pure and beautiful must pray, or else it will lose its beauty; a soul which is striving after this purity must pray, or else it will never attain it; a soul which is newly converted must pray, or else it will fall again; a sinful soul, plunged in sins, must pray so that it might rise again. There is no soul which is not bound to pray, for every single grace comes to the soul through prayer.” Divine Mercy in My Soul # 146

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
